New H-E-B Home Provides a Safe Haven for Children with Special Needs
116-Year-Old House Restored with the Help of More than 30 Local Businesses
On December 10, 2014, dozens of children poured out of the front doors of the newly completed H-E-B Home, welcoming each guest with a handmade Thank You card for their part in the restoration of a 116-year-old house to a beautiful 1,840-square-foot home that will serve as a caring environment for children with special needs for years to come.
“This has been a two-year journey for Respite Care, and we are overwhelmed with gratitude for H-E-B and the more than 30 contributing organizations that donated their time and talents, day-in and day-out, to build this magnificent home,” said Bert Pfiester, President and CEO of Respite Care of San Antonio. “To us, this is more than just a home. It’s a place of healing that will act as a safe stepping stone for our children to their forever family.”
The Monte Vista home was built in the early 1900’s, and is contiguous with the network of resident Respite Care properties. H-E-B renovated and restored the home to reflect the unique early 1900’s aesthetic, with many of the original elements preserved, including: a brick chimney, light fixtures, custom window shapes and sizes, moldings and hardwood floors. In consideration of families, each bedroom within the home was built large enough to fit two twin beds.
“This project would not have been possible without the support of our dedicated community partners,” said Bill Triplett, H-E-B Senior Vice President of Strategic Design and Respite Care board member. “From the foundation to the roof, and everything in-between, we want to say thank you to those organizations that joined us in donating time and resources to a project that will change the lives of children in need.”
In addition to H-E-B, more than 30 local businesses contributed to the project by offering more than $100,000 worth of free and discounted goods and services in the form of labor, materials, design work, project management, furniture, linens, appliances and more. These partners include: Joeris General Contractors, Biesenbach Mechanical, Eldridge Electric, Maldonado Landscaping, Gulf States Plumbing, Young Bros. Fire Protection, American Roofing, Systems Painting and Drywall and many more.
